Old soils, thin nutrients, and the plants that learned to cope.

Geological age has left a landscape that rewards patience and punishes assumptions.

Much of this landmass is geologically ancient and, crucially, has been spared the kinds of large scale renewal that refresh soils elsewhere. Extensive glaciation, widespread recent volcanic activity and vigorous mountain building all replenish mineral nutrients in other parts of the world. Across large areas here, weathering has simply continued for an extraordinarily long time without interruption. The result is soils that are often deeply weathered, low in some key nutrients, and structurally fragile once disturbed. There are fertile districts, and they matter enormously, but they are exceptions in a broader pattern of poverty.

Vegetation adapted rather than resisted. A great many native plants are efficient with nutrients, conservative with water, tough leaved and slow growing. Hard, small or narrow foliage reduces water loss. Deep or specialised root systems chase moisture and scarce minerals. Many species are adapted to periodic fire in ways that are complex and locally specific. The overall visual effect, the muted greys and olive greens rather than the lush green of wetter continents, is not a sign of ill health. It is the appearance of a flora that has optimised for a difficult budget.

Farming here has had to learn the same lesson, sometimes slowly. Practices imported from wetter, younger landscapes did not always translate. Over time, cropping and grazing have moved towards approaches that respect the limits: careful fertiliser use, retaining ground cover, managing salinity and erosion, matching stocking rates to what a dry year can carry rather than what a good year could. The successful operations tend to be the ones that plan for the poor season as the normal case and treat the good season as a bonus.
